TOPIK Overview

The Test of Proficiency in Korean (한국어능력시험) is the standard Korean language test recognized for university admission, employment, and visa applications.

Test Schedule

TOPIK is held approximately 6 times per year in Korea. Registration opens about 2 months before each test date through topik.go.kr. Slots fill quickly — register on the first day.

Registration Steps (In Korea)

  1. Create an account on topik.go.kr
  2. Log in during the registration period
  3. Select your test center and upload a photo
  4. Pay the fee (₩40,000 for TOPIK I, ₩55,000 for TOPIK II as of 2025)
  5. Print your admission ticket before the test date
TOPIK scores are valid for 2 years from the result announcement date. Plan your test timing based on visa or university deadlines.

KIIP (Korea Immigration & Integration Program)

KIIP (사회통합프로그램) is a free Korean language and culture program run by the Ministry of Justice. Completing KIIP gives you advantages for visa extensions and permanent residency.

How to Enroll

  1. Create an account on socinet.go.kr using your Alien Registration Number
  2. Apply for a placement test (사전평가)
  3. After receiving your level, enroll in a class through the website
  4. Attend classes at a designated center near your registered address
KIIP classes fill up quickly each semester. Check enrollment periods on socinet.go.kr and apply early. Your registered address on HiKorea must match the area where you enroll.

Other Korean Language Programs

University Language Institutes (어학당)

Most Korean universities operate language programs. Typically 10-week terms with 4 hours of daily instruction. Tuition: ₩1,500,000–₩1,800,000 per term.

Community Centers and Multicultural Centers

Many local community centers (주민센터) and multicultural family support centers (다문화가족지원센터) offer free or low-cost Korean classes. Contact your district office or call the Danuri helpline (1577-1366).
