Korea’s National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) provides mandatory health coverage for most long-term foreign residents.

How Enrollment Works

Most long-term visa holders are automatically enrolled after 6 months of residence. You will begin receiving monthly premium bills.

What NHIS Covers

  • Outpatient visits: approximately 30–50% copay depending on facility type
  • Hospitalization: approximately 20% copay
  • Prescription medication: copayment varies

Using Healthcare Services

  1. Bring your ARC to the clinic or hospital
  2. Register at reception
  3. See the doctor
  4. Pay your copayment at the billing counter
  5. Take prescriptions to a nearby pharmacy (약국)
Search for “국제진료소” (international clinic) on Naver Map or KakaoMap. Many university hospitals have dedicated international patient departments.

What Happens If You Don’t Pay

  • Insurance benefits may be suspended
  • You pay 100% of medical costs until premiums are settled
  • Unpaid premiums may affect your visa extension
